Grouping Techniques for Update Propagation in Intermittently Connected Databases

چکیده
We consider an environment where one or more servers carry databases that are of interest to a community of clients. The clients are only intermittently connected to the server for brief periods of time. Clients carry a part of the database for their own processing and accumulate local updates while disconnected. We call this the Intermittently Connected Database (ICDB) environment. ICDBs have a wide variety of applications including sales force automation , insurance claim processing, and mobile work forces. Our focus in the paper is on the problem of update propagation at the server in ICDBs and the associated processing at the clients. The typical client-centric approach involves the communication and processing of updates and transactions on a per-client basis , ignoring the overlap of data between clients. The complexity of this approach is on the order of the number of connecting clients, thereby limiting the scala-bility of the server. We propose a data-centric approach which clusters data into groups and assigns to each client one or more of these groups. The proposed scheme results in server processing complexity on the order of the number of groups, which we control. We propose various techniques for grouping and discuss the processing required at the clients to enable the grouping approach. While the client-centric approach is expected to signiicantly degrade with the increasing number of clients, we expect that a properly designed grouping scheme will sustain a number of clients that is signiicantly larger. A prototype has been developed and performance studies are currently in progress.

Pruning Update Log Files in Intermittently Connected Databases
Modern databases allow mobile clients that subscribe to replicated data, to process the replica without requiring continuous connectivity, and to receive the updates while connected to the server. In such an environment—usually known as the Intermittently Connected Database (ICDB) system—the server should maintain the updates to the database in the log file(s). These update log files should be ...
متن کاملA Classification Scheme for Update Propagation Methods in Deductive Databases
Incremental view recomputation is a well-established research topic in deductive databases and plenty of update propagation methods have been proposed within the last two decades. All these approaches essentially apply the same propagation technique but differ in the way they are realized, the focus they provide to the induced changes and the granularity of the computed induced updates. In this...
متن کاملGrouping, Segmentation and Recognition of Handwritten Social Security Images
In unconstrained document images, social security numbers can occur in very unpredictable states. This paper presents techniques in segmenting and recognizing the social security number image. We explore the use of relative locations to separate the image into groups of digits. We implement an existing segmentation technique that utilizes both the foreground and background data. Then improve up...
متن کاملReduction of Update Propagation Overhead for Data Warehousing Incorporating OODBs
Since the requirement of data warehouse is increasing, it is necessary to develop eflcient mechanisms for data warehouses incorporating various kinds of database systems. Essentially, materialized views are used for data warehouses and various methods for relational databases have been developed. In this paper, we will first discuss a method to realize materialized views for object-on’ented dat...
متن کاملSoft stratification for transformation-based approaches to deductive databases
The efficient evaluation of recursive views is a crucial issue in the research field of deductive databases. Results in this area are especially relevant for systems which will implement the new SQL:1999 standard, and hence will allow the definition of stratifiable recursive views. In particular, transformation-based solutions to query evaluation seem to be well-suited for extending existing re...
